Heimdall (from heim meaning "world" and dallr meaning "flowering tree") is counted as one of the Aesir in Norse mythology even though he was not considered the son of Odin. Heimdall was a representative of the world tree Yggdrasil and since Yggdrasil is often assumed to have been a rewriting for the Milky Way, it is believed that Heimdall was a sky god.
